Where to Find a Replacement Transfer Case

When you drive a four-wheel-drive vehicle a transfer case is a necessity. This case is what allows your vehicle to transfer between two-wheel and four-wheel drive by ensuring that both the front and rear axles receive power. Without a properly functioning case, your transmission will not be able to get power to both axles, which serious hinders the vehicle’s effectiveness.

Problems with the Case

If you run into serious issues with your transfer case, you will need to replace it. Before doing so, it is a good idea to weigh all of your options, so that you get the best deal for your money. Always take your time and make sure that you get a case that is in working order, as buying the first one that you come across will end up costing you more in the long run.

Used

Your first option is to pick up a used case from someone selling one online or in the newspaper. Of course, this is the riskiest methods of purchasing a transfer case, but it is also the least expensive. The main issue is that you will not be able to thoroughly check the case out before making the transaction, so you could be left with a part that does not work properly. Experienced mechanics can probably get a good idea of whether or not the part will work based on a quick look, so bring a mechanic with you if at all possible.

Rebuilt

Another inexpensive option is to purchase a transfer case that has been rebuilt. While this will cost you more than a used one, it should come with some sort of guarantee that it will work properly. Many parts stores will buy broken cases from car owners and then refurbish them. These parts stores end up selling these units to people who do not want to spend the money on a new unit, but do not like the risk involved with purchase a used case from another car owners.

New

Your last option is to purchase a brand new transfer case from a reputable auto parts dealer in your region. This is the most expensive option, but you can be certain that it will function at a high level. Before making this purchase, you will have to supply some detailed information regarding the make and model of your vehicle. This is done to ensure that you end up with the right transfer gearbox for your vehicle, rather than one that does not fit properly.

Mechanics

Of course, you can just visit a mechanic and have the shop install whatever unit they have in stock. This is the most convenient option because the shop will handle every aspect of the replacement. Keep in mind that you will pay a premium for the parts and the service, but the work should come with a warranty. This ensures that your transmission functions the way it should and that you get full power to all of your axles in your four-wheel-drive vehicle.
